Professional Experience
Stacey Kulesza received her B.S., M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering with a geotechnical focus from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. She joined the civil engineering department at Kansas State University in 2013. She currently serves on two technical committees of the Transportation Research Board and the ASCE Geo-Institute as well as the ASCE Geo-Institute outreach and engagement committee, and on the organizing committee for the 2021 ASCE Geo-Congress. She is a registered professional engineer in the state of Kansas.
Research
Kulesza's research focuses on identifying anthropogenic impacts on soil properties, applied geophysics and soil erosion potential, and characterizing infrastructure deterioration. Her research group seeks to understand the in situ integrity of natural materials and aging infrastructure to support the global initiative of sustainability and resiliency. Her research sponsors include the National Science Foundation, Federal Railroad Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation, Kansas Department of Transportation, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Kansas Water Research Institute.
Academic Highlights
Kulesza has authored or co-authored 14 peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous conference proceedings with her research group at Kansas State University. She has directed the completion of three Ph.D. dissertations and six master’s thesis since joining Kansas State University. She is currently supervising three Ph.D. dissertations and two master’s theses. In 2015, she received the Kansas State University Department of Civil Engineering Outstanding Teaching Award and the Chi Epsilon Advisor of the Year Award. She was a nominated speaker at SPOTLIGHT K-State in 2016 for innovative teaching practices. In 2018, she received the Kansas State University College of Engineering Outstanding Professor Award, the ASCE Section 7 Outstanding Engineer Volunteer Award and the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers Tri-Valley Young Engineer of the Year Award. Kulesza was named a Steve Hsu Keystone Research Scholar for 2018-2019, and a Darold and Debbie Davis Cornerstone Teaching Scholar for 2019-2022.
