The department of civil engineering is a community of learners committed to providing outstanding educational opportunities for our students. We also conduct advanced research in civil infrastructure design and environmental preservation.
Civil engineering and its subfields hold four of the top five positions in the 2020 U.S. News and World Report listing of “Best Engineering Jobs.”
Civil engineering ranks #5 in Kiplinger’s listing of top 25 majors overall in the U.S. for most lucrative careers, and its subfields are also in the top 25.

Behrooz Mirafzal and Hayder Rasheed are each recent recipients of named positions in the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering.
- Peric co-authors GEER report on 2020 earthquake in Petrinja, Croatia
Professor Dunja Peric co-authored a report on the 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Petrinja, Croatia. The work was conducted under the auspices of the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance Association, which is supported by the National Science Foundation.

The Region 7 Board of Governors of the American Society of Civil Engineers recently honored Mustaque Hossain and Hani Melhem, professors of civil engineering, with 2021 Region 7 awards.
